Furnas Lagoon Banks Requalification Project

“The rehabilitation of the Furnas Volcano Lagoon has been an excellent response to the environmental and touristic challenges that smaller islands face today and will continue to face in the future.”

- Constanze Krehl, S&D MEP, Coordinator on the REGI Committee

The Lagoon Banks Requalification Project has achieved the rehabilitation of the Furnas Volcanic Lagoon. The project has been fully funded by the EU Cohesion Fund, allocating 4.1m Euros to it. It considered the implementation, the urban sketch, the construction of structures and equipment for recreational use and to support the utilisation of the water, the banks and the respective landscape. The remodelling of the Furnas and Sete Cidades river basins had a two goals: to solve the eutrophication of the lagoons and to value and preserve the associated spaces through the creation of pedestrian paths, urban furniture and buildings, with a pedagogical emphasis. As with many outermost regions, the Azores make huge efforts regarding environmental protection. This project is not only about the protection of the area but also about education of the public and visitors.
